Far down below lies the bay, calm and placid. Not a ripple, not a sigh comes to disturb its serenity or mar the perfect beauty of the silver pathway thrown so lightly upon it by the queen of heaven. It falls there so clear, so unbroken, that almost one might deem it possible to step upon it, and so walk onwards to the sky that melts into it on the far horizon. "I have given it," returns she, in a low tone,—so low that he has to bend to hear it. "Do not be angry with me, do not—I——" "Say so, if you do: it will be honester. If you don't," threateningly, "I shall of course think the contrary." The painters were told what to do long, long ago, "in about the second generation after the first people.".
